Dr. Anil Bhan is one of India’s most respected cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons with over 37 years of experience.

He was part of the team that performed India’s first heart transplant, and he has helped with many transplant surgeries across the country.

Dr. Bhan performed a heart bypass surgery on an 18-month-old, the youngest baby in India.

He was also the first in India to use special advanced tools like the harmonic scalpel and to perform extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), the best procedure performed for severe heart patients.

Dr. Bhan has performed more than 28,000 heart and vascular surgeries with results that match the best hospitals in the world, more than 1,500 repeat surgeries in both adults and children and over 1,000 low-cost heart treatments.

In addition, he created and improved over 50 surgical tools that help make heart surgeries safer and more effective.

Dr. Bhan is highly skilled in performing pediatric heart surgery, valve repair surgeries, peripheral vascular surgeries, and aortic aneurysm surgeries as well.

He helped start three major heart surgery programs in Puttaparthi (1992), Whitefield (2001), and Max Heart and Vascular Institute (2004).

Besides this, Dr. Bhan also worked as a professor at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences and trained many young heart surgeons.

Career Highlights

Dr. Anil Bhan was the first in India to use special tools like the harmonic scalpel during heart surgeries.
He performed a heart Bypass on India's Youngest Baby, just 18 months old.
He gave a new life to a 3-month-old baby by performing a successful heart surgery.
Dr. Bhan completed a rare and successful heart bypass surgery on a 20-month-old baby.
He is known for doing rare and complicated heart surgeries on infants and small children.
He was also a member of the team that performed India’s first-ever heart transplant and has played an important role in many heart transplant surgeries all over the country.
Dr. Bhan was part of the team that created a record by performing the first heart transplant in Indore.
Additionally, he did a rare surgery called total arterial revascularization in a child suffering from a genetic condition called familial homozygous hypercholesterolemia.
Dr. Anil Bhan was among the first in India to use extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life-support method for patients with severe heart failure.

Dr. Anil Bhan was awarded the Silver Medal at PGI for first-order performance in the MS General Surgery examination.
He was honored Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Congress of Clinical and Preventive Cardiology by former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
He conferred the P.K. Sen Oration by the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Surgery and the K.N. Dastur Oration by the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Surgery.
Dr. Bhan was awarded Life Lifetime Achievement Award by the Human Care Charitable Trust and also Life Lifetime Achievement Award by KECESS, Kashmir Education, Cultural, and Science Society.
He was honored DMA Chikitsa Ratan Award by the Delhi Medical Association.
Received the Magnanimous Award for outstanding contribution in the field of cardiac and thoracic surgery and Appreciation Award by Rotary Clubs of Faridabad.

Dr. Anil Bhan published one of the earliest reports on angiographic follow-up of OPCAB (Beating Heart CABG) from India.
He published the third report in the world literature on Radial artery angiography and also published adenosine preconditioning of the Myocardium in patients with ventricular dysfunction undergoing myocardial revascularization.
Dr. Bhan used for the first time the Harmonic scalpel for the harvest of Radial and Internal mammary Artery conduits in India.
He described a new operative technique for repair of supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous drainage that was published in Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Anil Bhan described a new operative technique for coarctation of the aorta with type-B aortic dissection in the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
