He has received numerous honours, including the Best Paper Award at the 2009 Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Nephrology.

Nephrology departments have been founded in his honour at the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar, the SGPGI in Lucknow, the Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi, the Fortis Hospitals in New Delhi, and the Medanta - The Medicity in Gurugram.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Kher has presented more than three hundred and fifty talks at regional, national, and worldwide conferences; he has also authored or edited eleven books and contributed forty chapters to other volumes.

He has been honoured with fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Indian Society of Nephrology.
