A catheter, which is a long, thin, flexible tube, must be inserted into the body through an artery to do interventional radiology. The catheter combines the use of diagnostic and therapeutic techniques with the use of medical imaging.
A recognized residency program has been completed by the interventional radiologist, a medical doctor. After that, he or she can sit for the American Board of Radiology's board test. The interventional radiologist next finishes a fellowship training course. These professionals collaborate closely with other physicians and are crucial members of the medical staff.
Interventional radiologists perform various procedures, such as:
Angiography. This is an X-ray of the veins and arteries to look for abnormalities including constriction or blockage of the vessels.
Angioplasty. A tiny catheter with a balloon tip is inserted into a blood artery by the physician. After that, he or she blows up the balloon to clear a blockage in the vessel.
Embolization. To block blood flow through a blood vessel, the doctor inserts a material through a catheter into that blood vessel. You can do this to manage bleeding.
Stomach tubes. If you are unable to swallow, the doctor inserts a feeding tube into the stomach.
Ultrasonography inside blood vessels. To inspect a blood vessel for issues, the doctor employs ultrasonography.
Implant a stent. When a blood vessel becomes blocked, a doctor inserts a thin mesh coil (stent) inside it. To release the obstruction, he or she extends the stent.
Taking out foreign objects. To remove a foreign object from the blood vessel, the doctor inserts a catheter.
Biopsy perform using a needle. To take a tissue biopsy, the physician inserts a tiny needle under the guidance of imaging methods into virtually any area of the body. Without the need for surgery, this form of biopsy can provide a diagnosis. The needle breast biopsy is a typical instance of this treatment.
IVC protection. An IVC (inferior vena cava) filter is inserted by the physician. This vein in your abdomen is quite huge.
In order to reduce risk to patients and enhance health outcomes, the idea behind interventional radiology is to diagnose and treat patients using the least intrusive methods currently available. Compared to open surgery, these techniques are less painful, risky, and need less time for recuperation.
